Did You Just Tell Me To Put An Onion In My Sock? Yes, Yes I Did!

We’ve all heard about strange food-based health remedies before, and some of them sound pretty dubious. Are carrots really good for your eyes? Are cucumbers good for your skin? While the jury’s still out on these, there is one remedy that sounds even weirder, and it really works.

And it involves onions in your socks.

Yes, I'm talking about the same onion you use in your recipes.

For years, people sick with colds or the flu have gone to bed with sliced onions in their socks and woke up feeling refreshed. This sounds absurd, but there is a reason for it.

There are more than 7,000 nerve endings on the bottom of your feet that connect to the rest of you body. These nerves have been a major focal point of Eastern medicine for thousands of years. Onions, also a key ingredient in Eastern medicine, are naturally anti-bacterial. A sliced onion can purify the air around it. The trade-off, of course, is that the clean air smells like onions.

Fans of this treatment claim that going to sleep with the onion on your feet releases your body’s toxins into the root vegetable, leaving you feeling healthy and refreshed in the morning.

Here is a story from one "onion user":

My daughter and my husband both started having flu symptoms so my mom reminded me of the onion in the sock home remedy. I jumped on Pinterest and read a few different ones. I had a yellow onion but they recommend a white onion. Anyhow, I cut the ends off to use on my daughter so that it didn't get too messy. She had the aches, her throat was hurting and her temperature went up to 104. Around 1 am she had only dropped down .1 degree so I must admit that I got scared and gave her Tylenol. But my husband never took any medicine and when they woke up, they were both perfectly fine!!!! That sure beats taking a trip to the emergency room, visiting a doctor and paying all that money and then having to get a prescription! We paid less than a dollar for one onion and all is well in less than 24 hours! I'm a believer... (For those who say, BUT YOU GAVE HER TYLENOL!) you are right, I did, but we all know that Tylenol only covers the symptoms! I would have had to keep giving her Tylenol if I hadn't used the onion. Well, I hope this works for you too...
